There are 23 species of crocodilian in the world, and I feel that these amazing creatures need a little attention. So here are some crocodilian facts and photographs
)Crocodiles swallow stones to help with digestion as well as acting as a ballast.
)Crocodiles are often seen lying with their jaws open, this is not aggressive, but helps to cool the animals down.
)The first crocodiles appeared 240 million years ago!
)The largest crocodile species is saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), encountered from India to northern Australia and Fiji. In can reach 7 m (23 ft) in length and 1 tonne in weight! At 5 m (17 ft) length, it already has 0.5 tonne!
)The smallest crocodile is the dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis) from central Africa, which has a maximum length of 1.9 m (6.5 ft). It is more terrestrial than other crocodiles.
)When submerging under water, they close their ear and nostril flaps. They have a third eyelid, called the nictitating membrane that protects their eyes underwater.
)Crocodilians regularly shed their teeth.
)The temperature of crocodilian eggs determines the sex of the young. Males are produced at around 31.6 degrees celsius, and females produced at slightly lower and higher temperatures.
