Matilda

Journal Entry: Fri Sep 26, 2008, 7:19 AM
I'm a mum! This week I got a 3 month old baby veiled chameleon, and we've named her Matidla (Tilly or Tilda for short). She is so gorgeous and I'm rather in love with her. She is the first reptile I've ever kept, so saying that I am a nervous mother is a huge understatement, but so far everything seems to be going fine. She's just fascinating to watch, it's a good job I've finished my uni course or she would be a major distraction.

Some photos of our baby

We got the internet (finally!) this week too, so I should be able to keep on top of everything here and at our club *primateclub. If you haven't had a look already, then please pop along and join up. The more members we can get, the more everyones work will be seen.

Hope everyone is well :D

Awe she is a cutie.:) But even with me being an experienced herptile keeper I would ne nervous too with a baby chameleon. They can be a challenge to keep healthy...just watch the humidity with her and make sure you dust all of her food with calcium and vitamins! Also keep a good basking site with UV and heat light!

Thanks for the tips! She's my first reptile, but so far so good. The guys at the petshop are fantastic, I've already been down a couple of times to check things over with them. I'm certainly getting to grips with her general care now. She has a great set-up (tho i'd like to get some more live plants for her as soon as I have a car again to get to a good garden centre) but I would like to get a proper misting system. At the moment I am home alot so I can watch her all the time and make sure she is okay. :D

Just be careful what you are told at a pet store unless it's a reptile specialty store. If you have any questions you are better off asking a breeder or going onto a chameleon forum. Here are a few good sites you can check out if you like.:)
Chameleon Online [link]
Chameleon News [link]
Chamaeleonidae

Chameleons Dish [link]

Also a good reptile search engine.:) [link]

thanks for the advice :) The pet store are fab, they are reptile specific and have all done the courses that I am going to start soon, so I do trust their advice. I think I have read nearly everything on Chameleons dish already lol but I will check out all the others. x

You definitely have to post pics of him/her as he gets bigger.:) It always makes me nervous when people get any herptile from a pet store..especially one that is so delicate. I just have had some bad experiences with a lot of these stores only seeing the $$$ and not properly caring for the animals.

well so far so good! She's just going through her first shedding which has been interesting to watch. She's growing so fast :) I don't have many images of her yet, but *InsaneGelfling has loads so pop over to his gallery.

As for the petstore, I wouldn't have got her from there unless I was sure that they really knew what they were doing. This is a very small privatly owned shop, and the guys in there are really helpful. I've been in loads of times to check things and they have endless patience.

The private, "mom and pop", owner stores are usually ok. They at least take the time to properly care for their animals.:)

I have seen :iconInsanegelfing:s pics...some really nice herps.:)
